Dr. Lewis Foxhall Appointed Chair of National American Cancer Society Primary Care Advisory Group

Please join us in congratulating TCI's project director Dr. Lewis Foxhall on his recent appointment as the committee chair of the national American Cancer Society Primary Care Advisory Group.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) Primary Care Advisory Group provides input to the national ACS Board of Directors on issues involving the interaction of primary care and cancer control. Topics addressed include cancer prevention, screening and early detection as well as survivorship. The group is made up of representatives from the major national primary care organizations and ACS executive leadership.

Upcoming TCI Monthly Focus on Cancer Screening

TCI will spotlight the latest recommended cancer screening guidelines in its April Monthly Focus. Future Monthly Focus topics will cover tobacco use and cessation, survivorship issues, statistics and pain management/palliative care.

This fall, Texas Medicine magazine will devote an entire issue to cancer topics. TCI Project Director Dr. Lewis Foxhall will co-author a feature article on the latest recommended cancer screening guidelines. Texas Medicine magazine is published by the Texas Medical Association (TMA) and distributed to its physician members.

Tools for Texans: Helping Communities Fight Cancer Conference April 22-23


The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and the Nurse Oncology Education Program (NOEP) are co-sponsoring Tools for Texans: Helping Communities Fight Cancer, a two-day workshop April 22 -23 at the DoubleTree Hotel near Houston’s Intercontinental Airport.

Tools for Texans is a unique opportunity for community stakeholders, healthcare professionals, cancer survivors, volunteers, and anyone interested in cancer control to learn more about how to implement cancer prevention and control programs in their communities and throughout the state. The workshop will focus on today’s hot topics in cancer control - tobacco use, energy balance and screening and early detection services.

Look for Tobacco Poster in May


TCI’s newest educational poster will be in the May issue of Texas Medicine magazine, the professional publication of the Texas Medical Association.

This bilingual (English/Spanish) poster will focus on tobacco use and the benefits of quitting. Tobacco cessation resources will also be included.

This poster is the latest in a series produced by TCI in collaboration with the Physician Oncology Education Program (POEP). The posters are useful educational tools for both health professionals and patients. Past posters have covered survivorship, genetic testing, cancer prevention, skin cancer and clinical trials.

Physician Oncology Education Program’s New Podcast


Physicians interested in learning more about tobacco counseling for their patients can check out the free podcast on tobacco cessation presented by the Physician Oncology Education Program (POEP). This course covers tobacco cessation counseling and available pharmacotherapies as well as new and unusual forms of tobacco delivery such as hookahs and e-cigarettes.

This activity has been awarded 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM, including ethics. There is no charge for the podcast or for the continuing medical education credit. Visit the education section of www.poep.org to download the podcast and handouts.
