Texas Cancer Incidence

Texas Cancer Information provides cancer cases and age-adjusted incidence rates for 102 cancer sites for every county in Texas. The database, which is updated annually, currently includes annual cancer cases for 1995 through 2007. For each year, cancer case totals are provided by racial/ethnic group, by sex, by age and by general/specific cancer sites.

Cancer incidence and mortality data have been provided by the Texas Cancer Registry, Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch, Texas Department of State Health Services, 1100 W. 49th Street, Austin, Texas, 78756, http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/tcr/default.shtm, or (512) 458-7523.

Population data (which can be found on the TCI website Population page) are based on US Census Bureau Population Estimates Program and modified by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) using special processing procedures for counties affected by Hurricanes Rita & Katrina. The racial/ethnic groups represented are: White, Non-Hispanic White, Hispanic White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic. Deaths in persons of unknown race are not reflected in race/ethnicity breakdown. Hispanic ethnicity is not mutually exclusive from White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI) or other race. Hispanic ethnicity derived from North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) Hispanic Identification Algorithm and may be of any race. AI incidence data are based on linkage with US Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service patient registration files. For more information on the changes in racial/ethnic groupings, visit the Race Recode page on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) website.

Age categories are divided into 19 age groups: one group for ages less than 1 year, 16 five-year intervals for ages 5 through 84 years of age, and one group for ages 85 and above.

Rates are per 100,000 and age-adjusted to the 2000 US Standard Population (19 age groups - Census P25-1130) with 95% confidence intervals. Rates should not be compared with previously published rates that were adjusted to the 1970 standard. Age-adjusted rates per 100,000 and confidence intervals for total (both sexes), males and females are displayed to the right of the total cases for all ages for each sex. For more information on age-adjusted rates and confidence intervals, visit the glossary on the Texas Cancer Information Web site at http://www.texascancer.info/glossary.html.

Cancer incidence statistics are available for several geographic areas, including: County, State Planning Region, Public Health Region, and Texas. Regions specified are regions of residence. Cancer cases were grouped according to the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER) Site Recode ICD-O-3 (1/27/2003). Definition available at: http://seer.cancer.gov/siterecode/icdo3_d01272003/.

Please note: The age-adjusted rates displayed here should not be compared with rates published previously, unless the older rates are revised to use the same standard population and the same age categories for age-adjustment, the same coding system, and the same race/ethnic categories for race/ethnic-specific rates. Please contact Dr. David Risser, Statistical Data Requests, at the Texas Cancer Registry at call 1-800-252-8059 (within Texas) or (512) 458-7523, ext. 3610 for additional information or assistance in comparing rates.
