GOAL
The goal of this activity is to address the ongoing need for educating practicing physicians about new cancer therapies and screening, current treatment guidelines and resources available to assist them in their cancer screening practices.
Also, the activity will focus on new advances within the last year along with other ground-breaking scientific discoveries. In conclusion, physicians will have a new awareness and knowledge in optimal use of new therapies for cancer and screening practices.
After attending the conference, participants should be able to:
- Incorporate prognostic factors and guidelines by tumor site into clinical practice, providing more accurate, personalized diagnosis and optimal treatment options for improved patient care in hematology and solid tumor oncology (Knowledge, Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes);
- Be equipped with an awareness of the cancer care continuum and the place of primary care as well as the resources available for assisting patients through phases of cancer survivorship care (Knowledge, Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes);
- Provide patients with prevention guidance through early detection and clinical intervention (Knowledge, Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes);
- Apply current screening guidelines and recommendations to detect cancer in primary care setting early enough for optimal referral to specialists who provide up-to-date optimal treatment plans (Knowledge, Competence, Performance, Patient Outcomes).
This conference should be of value to medical oncologists, hematologists, primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals.

2018 Texas Cancer Plan
The Texas Cancer Plan (the Plan) aims to reduce the cancer burden across the state and improve the lives of Texans. As the statewide call to action for cancer research, prevention, and control, the Plan identifies the challenges and issues that affect our state and presents a set of goals, objectives, and strategies to help inform and guide communities in the fight against cancer. The intent of the Plan is to provide a coordinated, prioritized, and actionable framework that will help guide efforts to mitigate the cancer burden.

American Cancer Society 2018 HPV Forum: Attacking HPV from Every Angle July 27, 2018 in Houston, Texas
Mission: HPV Cancer Free
The American Cancer Society (ACS) will be hosting an educational forum to kick-off their Mission: HPV Cancer Free Campaign. The goal of the campaign is to
- increase HPV vaccination rates for preteens and
- eliminate gender disparities in HPV vaccination and reduce geographic disparities in HPV vaccination rates.
Mission Statement
Our work will increase HPV Vaccination rates for preteens to at least 80% by June 8, 2026, the 20-year anniversary of the FDA’s approval of the first HPV vaccine. By 2026, we will have partnered with ACS volunteers, parents, providers, healthcare organizations, and community leaders to meet this goal.

HPV Education Session: Key Interventions and Strategies to Raise HPV Vaccination Rates Webinar on May 9, 2018
Jennifer will specifically highlight the newly published Clinician & System Action Guides. The guides communicate collective guidance for health care providers, decision makers and support staff to implement key interventions and strategies to raise HPV vaccination rates. Content was developed with input from national thought leaders and by assembling resources from member organizations. Actions are specific to professional role or system size. The 6 guides are tailored to:
- Nurses/MA's
- Physicians, PA's, and NP's
- Dental Providers
- Office Administrative Teams
- Large Health Systems
- Small private practices
Jennifer will also touch on some of the other resources the roundtable has to offer, which are available through the online resource library.

Houston and Harris County Food Access Analysis Tool December 18, 2017
The Houston and Harris County Food Access Analysis Tool is an interactive map of the various food access-related services in Houston and Harris County that was collected prior to Hurricane Harvey. This tool was developed in response to a strong community voice seeking to identify, learn and connect all forms of providers in the food-related ecosystem to one another but also for medical providers to use this information to support patient care plans. The tool offers key features and capabilities such as:
- ability to search of all resources within a specific zip code by simply entering it into the search bar;
- zoom in and out to view community-centric information;
- access and plot the various food-related services and retailers by selecting the green layers icon and then the optional layers;
- the ability to view transportation routes, medical providers and income data;
- select multiple layers to overlay information; and
- lastly, print the information needed to connect residents and community partners.

CDC now routinely recommends two doses of HPV vaccine for 11 or 12 year olds to prevent HPV cancers. This recommendation makes it easier for parents to protect their children by reducing the number of shots and trips to the doctor. HPV vaccination is an important cancer prevention tool and two doses of HPV vaccine will provide safe, effective and long-lasting protection when given at the recommended ages of 11 and 12 years. Some of the specifics of the recommendation include:
- The first HPV vaccine dose is routinely recommended at 11-12 years old. The second dose of the vaccine should be administered 6 to 12 months after the first dose.
- Teens and young adults who start the series at ages 15 through 26 years will continue to need three doses of HPV vaccine to protect against cancer-causing HPV infections.
- Adolescents aged 9 through 14 years who have already received two doses of HPV vaccine less than 6 months apart, will require a third dose.
- Three doses are recommended for people with weakened immune systems aged 9-26 years.

HPV Vaccine Uptake in Texas Pediatric Care Settings: 2014-2015 Environmental Scan Report
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston has conducted a detailed assessment or "environmental scan" on HPV vaccination in pediatric care settings in Texas. The report provides an overview of HPV-related cancer burden in Texas and identifies barriers to and facilitators of HPV vaccination in the pediatric population as observed by Texas stakeholders. This project was funded by a grant from the National Cancer Institute. Learn more....

Skin Cancer Prevention Toolkit For Institutions of Higher Education
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Melanoma Moon Shot Program and Cancer Prevention and Control Platform seek to develop and implement community-based efforts related to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer, specifically melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. These two teams collaborated to develop the Skin Cancer Prevention Toolkit For Institutions of Higher Education. The toolkit is designed to assist college and university leaders in adopting, implementing and enforcing skin cancer prevention campus policies and practices.
The tools and materials provided in this toolkit support and explain the benefits and rationale for a 100% Indoor Tanning-Free Campus Policy, a Sun Protection Campus Policy, and skin cancer prevention education and health services activities. This toolkit also provides resources and tips on drafting, enforcing, communicating and evaluating policy.

Healthy Congregations Toolkit
The Energy Balance Work Group at MD Anderson Cancer Center worked with local partners and healthcare professionals to develop the Healthy Congregations Toolkit. We are pleased to share this with you and hope that it is helpful in assisting you with incorporating healthy programs within your institution.
The Toolkit focuses on "energy balance," or the way to eat well (energy intake) and being physically active (energy output) for better health.
The Healthy Congregations Toolkit offers suggestions and resources on the following topics:

- Food for the Soul: MD Anderson Cancer Center offers speakers on a variety of topics for your congregation.

Tobacco-Free Policy Toolkit for Institutions of Higher Education
On behalf of the City of Houston/Harris County Community Transformation Initiative, the Comprehensive Cancer Control Tobacco Work Group at MD Anderson Cancer Center created a Houston/Harris County Tobacco Task Force (Task Force) to serve as a place for collaboration, resource development, and technical assistance to address tobacco use among college campus populations. The Houston Department of Health & Human Services received a planning award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to build capacity to support healthy lifestyles in Harris County. The award targets tobacco-free living, active living and healthy eating, quality clinical and other preventive services, and social and emotional wellness.
The work group was charged with lending their expertise to the development of a Tobacco Task Force Toolkit. The purpose of the Toolkit is to provide a coordinated strategic framework for institutions of higher education in Houston/Harris County to develop and or strengthen their current campus tobacco policy.
New, Easier to Use, Interactive Access to Care Tool
We are happy to announce the availability of our new, easier to use, interactive Access to Care tool. The Access to Cancer Care for Low-Income and Uninsured Patients database at http://www.texascancer.info/access is intended to reach low-income or uninsured Texans seeking free or low-cost cancer screening or treatment. Texas Cancer Information staff investigated procedures, contacts and clinic locations for screening and treatment for every Texas county. Information on how to obtain cancer care services in each of these counties is now available in English and Spanish. Social workers or volunteer organizations can also print out this information to give to their clients.

Colorectal Cancer and Sun Safety Posters
In collaboration with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Texas Medical Association (TMA), Texas Cancer Information has developed a new Colorectal Cancer Awareness poster entitled Get the Scoop on Colorectal Cancer (Infórmese de los detalles sobre el cáncer colorectal) and a new Skin Cancer Awareness poster entitled Be Sun Smart! - ¡Actúe inteligentemente respecto al sol!. These posters are bilingual in English and in Spanish. The information presented on the front of each poster is for general public and patient audiences while the back of the posters are for healthcare professionals. You can download copies of these posters by clicking on the images, below, or by visiting our Educational Materials page. Please let us know if you would like extra copies for your clinic or office.
Energy Balance Resource List for the Houston MSA
The new Energy Balance Resource List has been made possible by the contributions of the members of the Comprehensive Cancer Control Energy Balance Workgroup.
The purpose of this guide is to provide the public with a list of energy balance organizations in the Houston MSA working to improve the health of Houstonians by providing opportunities for educational programming, physical activity and nutrition.
