Texas Skin Cancer/Melanoma Screening and Prevention Summit



The Texas Skin Cancer/Melanoma Screening and Prevention Summit, hosted by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was held in Houston on October 29th and 30th.

Summit Purpose


Participants included essential partners in prevention: federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial governments; members of the business, health care, and education sectors; community and nonprofit organizations. Through this summit particpants worked to:

  • Identify the barriers and solutions to implementing the goals of The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer as determined by the educational, parks and recreational, and health care (pediatricians, family practice, dermatologists) sectors.
  • Identify melanoma and skin cancer prevention and early detection research opportunities in Texas
  • Address gaps in evidence-based research related to melanoma and skin cancer screening
  • Develop an energized, evidence-informed collaborative network to develop a Texas-based skin cancer screening research initiative
