TARGET
Texas nurses and social workers who interact with low-income, uninsured patients including those in rural areas and those with Spanish as a primary language.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this educational activity, funded by a grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, is to enhance the knowledge base and practice of nurses and social workers by increasing their knowledge of the adverse health impact of the lack of health insurance, barriers to care facing their patients who are low-income and/or uninsured Texans seeking cancer prevention, screening and treatment services and improved competence in the use of the Access to Cancer Care database and other online resources.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, nurses and social workers should be able to:

  • Understand barriers to care related to access to prevention, screening and treatment services for low-income and uninsured Texans,
  • Address adverse health outcomes and disparities in access to care, cancer incidence and mortality for low-income, uninsured, rural, Spanish-speaking and other underserved populations,
  • Anticipate the future impact of health care reform on access issues, and
  • Identify resources available to nurses and social workers, including the TCI Access to Cancer Care for Low-Income and Uninsured Patients website and other resources that can assist them in obtaining services for their underserved patients.

The following six competencies/objectives will be addressed and assessed in the course:
  • Competency 1:  Accept that health disparities exist for underserved populations in Texas.
  • Competency 2:  Define the care issues that underserved Texans have related to cancer care.
  • Competency 3:  Appraise the impact of poor healthcare services for underserved people.
  • Competency 4:  Translate the impact of healthcare reform on healthcare access issues.
  • Competency 5:  List resources available to assist indigent and uninsured Texans in obtaining quality healthcare services.
  • Competency 6:  Provide guidelines for application of materials learned to patient population.

2.0 Contact Hours for Nurses
Accreditation Statement:
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

2.0 contact hours for nursing will be provided upon successful completion of the entire module.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING 2.0 CREDIT HOURS:
  1. Registration. Fill out and submit. There is no fee to complete this course. This activity was updated in June 2014 and re-released on July 21, 2014. If you registered for the original Access to Care CE in 2012-2014, you will need to re-register to take the updated CE.
  2. Acknowledgements and Disclosures. You will need to review and accept.
  3. Access to Cancer Care for Low-Income and Uninsured Patients: Slidecast Presentation with Video Vignettes. You must view each slide of the presentation and view each video vignette in order to pass the test.
  4. Test Questions. Nurses must complete and submit the test and must pass with a grade of 80% or higher to receive contact hour credits. Social workers may take the test but no minimum score is required to receive CEU credits.
  5. Evaluation Questions. Everyone must complete and submit the quick evaluation. We love to hear from you! We use your feedback to constantly improve our courses.
  6. Once steps 1-5 have been completed, you will be given access to your certificate.

To receive a certificate of successful completion for 2.0 contact hours:
  • Complete and submit online registration form

  • For nurses, complete and submit post-test (Must achieve a score of 80% or better)

  • Once successful completion is verified, a Certificate of Successful Completion will be awarded and can be printed.
