- 2013 Cervical Cancer Summit
- On January 29, 2013, MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Cervical Comprehensive Cancer Control Workgroup and Gynecologic Department, Cervical Cancer-Free Texas, and Houston Community College Coleman College for Health Sciences sponsored the Second Annual Cervical Cancer Summit at the United Way of Greater Houston. This successful collaborative effort drew 212 attendees committed to raising awareness and education about the importance of providing HPV vaccinations for females and males and the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer. Medical professionals from local hospitals, community clinics and academic settings joined cervical cancer survivors and community health workers to learn about:
- how to broach the subject on the importance of HPV vaccination for females and males to adolescents, college age adults, and parents;
- how to implement innovative practices/programs in their clinical and academic settings;
- the Affordable Care Act as it relates to women’s health care delivery in Texas; and
- survivorship issues (e.g., barriers to care they encountered; why they may or may not have gone in for a Pap; and how this diagnosis has affected them and their loved ones).
- This Summit is vital because in spite of effective prevention and screening, women continue to be infected by the human papilloma virus (HPV), develop cervical cancer, and suffer the consequences of the tumor and its treatment.
- CME, CNE, CHES and CHW continuing education hours were also offered. Audio and video of the summit are posted online below.

- 2012 Cervical Cancer Summit: Raising Awareness, Identifying Barriers
- A collaborative effort between MD Anderson’s Cervical Comprehensive Cancer Control Workgroup, Cervical Cancer-Free Texas, Houston Community College, and Latinos Contra El Cancer produced the city’s first annual Cervical Cancer Summit in January 2012.
- The summit brought together approximately 150 university and school-based nurses, health professionals from community clinics and academic settings, and local community and political leaders to
- discuss cervical cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship issues;
- review evidence-based practices; and to
- establish a network of individuals dedicated to reducing the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer in Houston and the surrounding area.
- It was a huge step toward solidifying commitments to help foster collaborative grant opportunities, promote survivorship issues, and identify the gaps in services and resources that exist.
